Content was adapted for platform-specific requirements while maintaining a cohesive visual identity.
The Challenge
Local government communications face a unique challenge: translating complex policy issues, public services, and community initiatives into information that residents can quickly understand and act on.
The District 3 office needed to communicate with a diverse audience across multiple channels while maintaining consistency, accessibility, and public trust. Communications needed to support both immediate community needs and long-term civic engagement goals.
Key objectives included:
Increase awareness of county programs and services
Support community participation in events and initiatives
Maintain a consistent visual identity across communication channels
Present complex information in an approachable and accessible format
Strengthen connections between residents and local government
Overview
As a Fellow and Communications Designer for Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer’s office, I supported public-facing communications serving more than 140,000 constituents across San Diego County’s Third District.
Working across digital, print, and community outreach channels, I translated policy initiatives, public services, and community programs into accessible, engaging communications that informed residents and strengthened public engagement.
My work included newsletter design, social media content, event promotions, informational materials, and visual assets supporting county initiatives, constituent services, and community events.
Communications Strategy
My approach focused on making government information more accessible, engaging, and actionable.
Simplifying Complex Information Government programs, policy initiatives, and public services often contain large amounts of information. Visual hierarchy, clear messaging, and thoughtful design helped transform complex topics into content residents could easily navigate.
Creating Consistency Across Channels Residents encountered District communications through newsletters, social media, event materials, and printed collateral. Establishing consistent visual systems helped strengthen recognition and trust across every touchpoint.
Designing for Community Engagement Every communication was designed with action in mind—whether encouraging residents to attend an event, access a service, learn about a policy initiative, or connect with county resources.

Reflection
This experience strengthened my ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences while balancing clarity, accessibility, and engagement.
Working within local government reinforced the importance of audience-centered communication and demonstrated how thoughtful design can improve public understanding, increase participation, and make civic information more accessible.
The project also expanded my experience working across communication systems rather than individual deliverables: considering how newsletters, social media, print materials, and community outreach work together to support a broader public engagement strategy.
